The First Day: Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Workshop

The Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Workshop meets at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot at the toe of the Matanuska Glacier. The parking lot is accessed from the Glacier Park Resort road located at mile 103 of the Glenn Highway. All participants are responsible for their own transportation. We recommend traveling the evening before to the course starting location in order to be rested and on time for class.

When everyone gathers, the instructors will give an orientation, do an equipment check, and start on basic instruction. Next the class will walk to the ice, put on crampons, and instructors will give classes on crampon adjustment, climbing technique and safety, roping up, and hauling systems. This is a very busy day!
